Trainwreck Spotting

Matt Drudge 's report on an alleged infidelity scandal in the John F. Kerry campaign broke about an hour ago. Fact or fiction, I've been having fun watching the impending trainwreck. Wonkette and Instapundit [11:46 AM] were the first mainstream bloggers (Did I just say that???) to post something about it.

The wonderful thing about the Internet and weblogs are the timestamps. Here's the moment the story broke on Howard Dean's Blog for America:

second and check out DRUDGE! HERE IT COMES!!! Posted by barry in va at February 12, 2004 11:37 AM

Google's news search had just two articles ("Will Press Pounce on Drudge's Kerry Rumor?" and "Media investigating alleged recent infidelity Democrat rivals...") as of 12:30 PM. Though one outlet is for journalists and the other is something I'd put in the right-wing category to say the least.

I guess at the moment I am much more interested in how this unfolds from a media coverage perspective, than whether or not there is any truth in the story. Either way, this is going to be a trainwreck for either Kerry or the sharks that get caught chasing nothing more than blood in the water.

At the moment, much of bloggerdom appears to be silent. Either they're getting real work done or waiting to see which direction things turn. As of 1 PM there's no word from Dave Winer, Doc Searls, Jeff Jarvis, or David Weinberger on the story. More importantly, I don't see anything from Mickey Kaus, Joshua Marshall, or Eric Alterman. Nothing from Jim Romenesko either but Andrew Sullivan has a very brief mention of the Drudge story in the Daily Dish.

Perhaps the real story and commentary is unfolding on the campaign blogs themselves. The Dean Blog has been on fire with comments and the John Kerry Blog has comments full of back-and-forth between Kerry and Dean supporters. The John Edwards Blog has comments that read like kids on Christmas morning.

At 2 PM there's nothing from CNN, although it appears as though Ken and Barbie are breaking up, Fox News isn't going near the story at the moment, and MSNBC is covering human cloning and the "battle" over gay marriage.

Of course, all of this is very early in terms of coverage and reaction. But it reminds me of past alleged scandals where the big voices let someone else like Drudge break the story and then pounced. Not only are most of the big media not covering this one but the tech bloggers turned political bloggers (and the just plain political bloggers) are no where to be found. Granted, there are a few exceptions.

Leave it to one of my daily reads, The Scotsman, to run the first mainstream story: "Mystery of Kerry and the Intern". It's essentially a rehash of the original Drudge story, but it leads with "Allegations against Vietnam war hero John Kerry today threatened his runaway presidential campaign." Something tells me the over-the-pond tabloids are redoing tomorrow's front pages as we speak, but what about The New York Times or The Washington Post?.

The original Drudge story alleges that "A serious investigation....has been underway at TIME magazine, ABC NEWS, the WASHINGTON POST, THE HILL and the ASSOCIATED PRESS." So is Drudge just lighting the match on a lot of gasoline that's already been spilled?

As of 3 PM the most active discussions about the story are happening at the Howard Dean Blog, the John Kerry Blog, the John Edwards Blog, and even the now defunct Wesley Clark Blog has something to talk about. Although they appear to be more interested in the actual news report that Clark will endorse Kerry tomorrow.

Nick Denton's latest micro-content blog, Wonkette, has some additional posts this afternoon. Editor Ana Marie Cox reports that ABC radio in DC has reported the story and she also links to a NewsMax.com article from April of last year titled "The Hill: Boston Globe to Probe Kerry Private Affairs". Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds has a few more links up, including one back to this site. Now I'm finally starting to see the blogosphere abuzz like gangbusters over the story.

Mickey Kaus finally chimes in [11:23 AM PT] and references a September 2, 1998 Boston Herald story about Kerry and a young Georgetown grad. Looks like he's writing, linking, and thinking fast and furious right now. Eric Alterman has also just referenced the story but notes that "I don’t ipso facto believe anything I read on Drudge, so I’m not going to make a big deal about its hypothetical implications."

This all reminds me of those Tootsie Roll pop commercials growing up as a kid. ("How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?") The new questions is this: How long does it take for a potentially major story to hit the mainstream blogosphere? It looks like 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It could take that many days to reach the mainstream media. Blog on the rumor and print on the news? Perhaps not for everyone. Even some of the well known bloggers now have too much to loose by moving too quickly on a story. The cycle repeats itself. Stay tuned...

Most places are still silent on the Kerry/intern story, but it looks like it will now have to compete with Clark's endorsement of Kerry. The impact of the intern story will thus be lessened. If Chris Lehane thought he was going to get a news cycle all to himself he's sadly mistaken.

Go buy a National Inquirer.

I went with the story after seeing that the Drudge Report named names. This is not just a whispered allegation, it is a full throated shout out at the press. Wonkette seems to think it refers to an incident that occurred in the 1980's and has an older article about it.

Allegedly the Boston Globe is working on a big story on the scandal. They just got scooped.

I don't see this conversation on the Blog for America. Did it get deleted?

I think the story was leaked by the squeaky clean Edwards, who bragged about being a Clinton acolyte, this is his last chance to knock down Kerry.
The Republicans would have done the smear after the nomination. That would be more effective and more timely and more damaging. Now Kerry would have weathered the storm and it would be old news in the general election. The Republicans would do the smear three days before the general election, to pay back what the Dems did to Bush's drunk driving.

I got a ? For people posting about this so called scandal. Why is this story relevant? This is not Clinton. That story was relevant because of whether he lied in front of a grand jury about Monica. Are all future candidates for any kind of position; Whether it be a head of a company or political office going to be required to disclose if they ever got any nookie on the side? Give me a break! If story is true and I am Kerry I'd say "It's a personal issue and none of your business whether I had an affair." Please don't tell me it makes him unfit for the Presidency. Look at the history of Presidents involving women. This country some day needs to grow up.

Posted by: Tim at Feb 15, 2004 7:58:40 AM

Um, Since Kerry just denied it happened, if it turns out to be true, He is completely unfit to be president. If "Growing Up" means accepting a lier as our LEADER, we should NOT grow up. This is, after all, the reason most democrats say President Bush has to go.....With no evidence i might add. It is only a non-issue if the person accused admits it is true, like clinton did in 92. I am a registered Republican, but i honestly cannot see what the democrats see in Kerry anyway. Edwards is a much better choice, as there is no 20 year record of bizarre votes following after him. Jesus christ, if Kerry had his way, virtually every weapons system we have in the military today would have NEVER been fielded!!! How can he claim he will defend our country from terrorists? What should we use...........STICKS????? By the way, all of you that oppose the war in Iraq are WRONG.....I actually went and saw the conditions those poor people were living in, and they have it better now by FAR. As far as WMD's are concerned.....The jury is still out on that one....Imagine if i took 10 18 wheel trucks full of stuff and had 7 years to hide them in a place with the same area as california. How long would it take people to find them???? 1 year? 2? 10? THEY WILL BE FOUND, hopefully before some real shitbags get a hold on them.

Jennifer A. Fitzgerald, Jennifer A. Fitzgerald, etc. Who is she? George W. Bush's lover. Why aren't Drudge (aka Toilet Plunger), Rush (aka Addict) and the other morons all over this one? Jennifer A. Fitzgerald - Bush aide and lover. Let's get it out there, folks.

This reply is a response to George Poitras in reply to my post.

Hey George you miss the point. Why are they even digging up some alleged affair between Kerry? Answer To try to find dirt on him. As for lying. Give me a break. Bush makes up more BS than any recent President I have ever seen. Bush touts a program, has photo op then later strips the program of funding he was touting. As for the WMD's... David Kay Bush's MAN said their aren't any WMD's. Oh Sadaam had them. But they were mostly destroyed after first gulf war. Alot of theories floating around about what happened to WMD's Bush administration thought Sadaam had. One is poor record keeping but another is Sadaam enjoyed being feared by the world and middle eastern counties. So he chose to bluff the international community. Oh and yes he could have had them moved to another country. But hey guess what if we don't attack Iraq. Sadaam doesn't move or give the WMD's to someone else. Also some of those WMD's have a shelf life of only so many years before they are non threatening. As for things being better in Iraq now. Well I won't disagree the world is a better place without Sadaam. However Bush's main point for going to war against Iraq was not to rid world of Sadaam or free Iraqi people. It was the WMD's and how United States was in imminent danger. Despite the revising by Bush administration now that WMD's were not found. Some in intelligence community warned Iraq was not a threat. These people were ignored. Hence the Office of Special Plans creation by Vice President Cheney. The international community wanted Bush to wait at least a year before deciding to invade Iraq. So that weapons inspectors could scour the country looking for WMD's. Well Bush could not wait. Why couldn't he wait? This country sometimes has to fight wars. But I would hope my President would as last resort when all other means have been exhausted would then go to war. Bush had a hard on for this Iraq war. H has gotten it and now this great country is paying the price in lives, treasure and international opinion.

PS I would not compare possiblly lying about having an extramarital affair with misleading the country into a war.

Hello,

I'd just like to report this news report I heard today on Fox Radio news. Tracey Poliar the woman who allegedly had affair with John Kerry has denied ever having affair with Kerry. Or even working for him as intern. Now Kerry and Tracey have both denied the affair. Does this put this to rest?
