Probing The Book of Probes

Boxes and Arrows has published my latest book review, but it's unlike anything I think I've ever reviewed before. Instead of a book full of nothing but text, The Book of Probes combines the words of Marshall McLuhan with the images of David Carson. So my review had to focus on not only the unique presentation approach, but more importantly what this kind of collaboration can produce in the digital age.

Book Review: The Book of Probes - Marshall McLuhan, David Carson, Edited by Eric McLuhan, William Kuhns, and Mo Cohen

The Book of Probes

"Combine the probing thoughts of media culture sage Marshall McLuhan with the visual insights of design guru David Carson and the result is the quintessential coffee table book for anyone that works with technology and design. The Book of Probes is an intentional chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter experiment to combine the ideas of McLuhan with the images of Carson in thought provoking ways. - Steve MacLaughlin, review of The Book of Probes

Many thanks to David Carson and Gingko Press for all their help providing access to the book and some of its images.

It was very odd that I decided to check out the Boxes and Arrows site yesterday and see the review for the Book of Probes given that I later heard that you were over at Corinne McLuhan's home yesterday to discuss the McLuhan festival with her.

My wife is Marshall's grandaughter Emily and I had showed her the review and she said that you were over (at least she was pretty sure it was you). Anyway, just wanted to drop by and say 'hi'.

Cheers!

Oops, I think we made a mistake. I just met a man with the same name as yours and when my husband mentioned the excellent review you wrote I assumed it was the same person (the other Steve also has a deep interest in McLuhan), however after reading some of your blog (interesting that you think Edwards would have picked up the Dean supporters, I was pretty sure they'd scatter, somewhat disheartened, and lose interest in the primaries and the candidates until the election was in full swing, then back whoever was selected...it'll be an interesting race if Edwards becomes the VP candidate, and where the heck has Dean gone?) I'm pretty sure you're a different Steve (a much younger looking Steve, that's for sure!).
Thanks for the great review of the book, and if you are interested in all things McLuhan you may be interested in the Toronto International McLuhan Festival of the Future happening later this year, check out www.mcluhanfestival.com for details...the site is pretty bare right now but we're working hard to get it looking a little spiffier and adding more content.
Regards.
